Core 1 rules are for use where a small team armed with ranged weapons encounters a swarm of unarmed bogies (aliens, zombies, whatever) in a labyrinthine environment. The idea behind Core 2 is to expand Core 1 such that it can be used for encounters between groups of similarly armed opponents in much more open environments.
I have not yet done any work on creating Core 2 and am creating this forum area so that those who are interested may discuss it. I will be concentrating my efforts on Core 1 however my criteria/recommendations for Core 2 are as follows.
1. In keeping with the concept of Core 1, the Core 2 rules should be kept as simple as possible for the benefit of new players and should employ additional rules to add challenges for more experience players. Core 2 need not be as simple as Core 1 however they should be largely based upon Core 1. My thinking here is that a complete novice would be encouraged to begin with Core 1 and perhaps move on to Core 2 when they have gained a little experience.
2. Game play should take place on a grid to simplify range and line of sight calculations.
3. Players must not be required to buy specific figures or terrain in order play. They should be able to use any appropriate figures/terrain and/or maps drawn on paper with cardboard tokens.
4. While I anticipate that Core 2 scenarios will provide a choice of troops, weapons, and different types of terrain, all of these things should be dealt with in additional rules. The Core 2 rules should describe only one type of troops armed with guns and bombs as per Core 1. Core 2 should also use the same type of terrain as Core 1 i.e. it's impassable, blocks line of site, and does not introduce the concept of partial cover. Terrain that provides partial cover and is difficult and/or dangerous should be defined in additional rules.
